Lessons from my five year old
My daughter turned five this week. In celebration of her birthday, I've been generating even more appreciations of her than usual.
(sidenote: I've decided that this is one of the top five parenting techniques to cultivate. Appreciation = magic in relationships)
One of the qualities I most appreciate about J is her ability to make every situation into sunshine. No matter what is going on, she'll find a way to make it a game, or a positive place to be.
This morning we were making pancakes, a weekly Sunday morning event. I was feeling tired and grumpy after a full weekend of parties and children. J sat on the counter chattering to me while I mixed the batter. The batter was lumpy.
She said: "Helen, we'd better get the lumps out of the batter." I replied: "I don't think they're going to come out at this point." To which she countered right away: "Good! the lumps are the best part of the pancake anyway."
And then when I flipped the first pancake in the pan it cracked. J exclaimed: "Oh! That broken piece will make it easier to cut!"
Sunshine full on. When I'm with her, her joyful attitude dissolves my clouds away. Thank you my little sunshine girl.
