"I consider Gay and Kathlyn to be my teachers." -John Bradshaw
There is not one 'right' way...
There is not one 'right' way...
In the last few weeks I wound myself up in a knot over 'being right'. I convinced myself that I was more enlightened about parenting than some other people. It was so evident to me how these parents were disrespecting their children -- how they were stifling the flow of feeling and wellbeing in their lives.
And guess who was really suffering.
I got so wound up about my 'rightness' that I created headaches, anxiety in my belly, and a severely grumpy attitude.
Even all my physical symptoms didn't cue me into waking up. What DID wake me up, was listening to myself complaining about all the angry people around me.
Hello!? Everyone around me is angry? Ummmmmmmm, who has the headache? Who is grumpy?
That would be me. My self-righteousness got me wound up and angry. Nothing else changed.
So I made a re-commitment to appreciation. I began to deliberately focus on the amazing qualities in those parents I was previously judging. I looked for the love and saw it.
And I felt more peaceful. I still feel peaceful writing this. It isn't my job to fix or change anybody. My only job is to enjoy my life.
I hope you are enjoying yours. Life is too fabulous to worry about what other people are doing.
With love,
Helen
