What I’ve Learned From My Cat: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Katie_New_Blog_Headshot.jpg

Our feline Lucy will stand in the hall and yowl pointedly until one of us comes to clean her litter box. She will plurt and patiently lead us to the place she wants to have arranged for her nap. Yet if she thinks it’s time for more food now, and we’re engaged with something, she’ll make her request, then find a spot nearby and lie down to rest, because she knows she’s going to get fed.  Each day she both repeats and explores, creating a new environment within her secure world. It’s clear to me after fourteen years that Lucy is a master of knowing where to focus her energy.

I started wondering, what leads her to insist on some things and easily let others go?  She operates from what looks like a simpler map of choices than you or I might use, yet the fundamentals are quite similar. She traverses her own version of Maslow’s hierarchy:

Starting with Physiological (the litter box), through Safety (meows to come in when loud gardeners are in the yard), Love/Belonging (has a definite cuddle quotient to be filled every day), Esteem (she experiences herself as an equal voice around here) and Self-Actualization (she regularly invents new interactions, new places to explore).

She has taught me a lot about listening to my own body wisdom and insisting on those actions that ground me in health and safety, such as only eating what gives me vitality and more breath, and making and keeping agreements. But she’s also reminded me daily that fulfillment comes from expressing creativity and accepting the way things are.

From Lucy’s presence and gracious acceptance of change, I’ve learned to renew my base every day while nourishing all the levels of fulfillment.

How are you nourishing you and your relationships today?
