Featured Coach | Matt Chapman

Matt Chapman

I guide people toward their own personal empowerment by showing them how to be present in their lives. Knowing their own inner strength and trusting in themselves as they move through critical junctures, gives my clients a new vantage point of the situations in which they find themselves. The ability to "be present" in these moments is critical to success.

Matt Answers Top Questions

What vision do you have for your life and your coaching practice?

From the start, my vision has been for every man to be able to be fully present in all aspects of life.  During my time at The Hendricks Institute, my goal was personal growth, not to become a coach. Then, about 4 years ago, I felt the drive to hold a weekend workshop for men.  About a dozen men signed up and my vision and passion to become a coach were born.

What are the top three things you love about coaching?

  • Watching men’s lives change in wonderful and unexpected ways.
  • Supporting men in remembering all the beautiful and inspired parts of themselves they have numbed out over the years.
  • This is my way of loving and paying back my mentors for all they have done to change my life.

Before I started coaching I …

was a corporate executive struggling with work/life balance and feeling comfortable in my body.

What makes you laugh?

My son has amazing comedic timing.  He has me laughing almost every day.

The legacy I want to leave behind is …

Leading a movement where men can reliably connect with one another in deep, meaningful conversations.  Even when I go for a bike ride, my friends know we’re going to be talking about our lives and what it takes to be a successful men in these times.  Having deep meaning to my life isn’t how I was raised, but it is how I’ll live for the rest of my life.

Who are your top three people you would want to coach and why?

  • Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of GE: GE has incredible product diversity and competes in many different markets.  They have influence globally.  To be able to support the CEO who has this much reach would be a dream come true.  That dream is to support top leaders in growing all the areas of their lives to be full and enriching.  A dream of balanced leaders who create a balanced world.
  • Colin Powell: I believe he has global influence and respect.  I would support him in a way that allows him to have his family and all the love and connection he wants during this later stage of his life.  And then support him in bringing his mature balance to the world because I think it could use it right now.
  • President Obama: I love his steady nature and commanding presence.  My thought is to support him in making a stand in what he believes in.  A stand that doesn’t waver in the face of adversity and challenge.  That getting unattached to being liked, even if it is only for one issue he truly believes in.

What were the greatest benefits you received from studying at the Hendricks Institute?

I feel like I had a chance to grow up with mature balanced role models during my time with Katie and Gay.  In addition, I learned how to stand in the face of whatever challenge was before me and not turn away as I had been doing all my life.

The book that inspired me most was The Alchemist. Why?

The main character, Santiago, follows his intuition and it takes him on an amazing journey to find his life’s purpose.  This book has opened me to my intuition and I now follow it and support others in doing the same.

What brings you the most joy in your day to day life?

When I’m not coaching, I love mountain biking with my 16 year old son, having dinner conversation with my 18 year old daughter, and spending time with my wife who I’ve been with for 28 years.

What seven things could you not do without?

  • My wife Diana who has seen me grow through almost 3 decades now.
  • My two children.  Both of whom are about to head off to college.
  • Freedom
  • Love
  • Green space to go biking within a few miles from my home.
  • An ocean to go sailing on within a few miles from my home.
  • My very close friends who are there for me no matter what happens.
  • Being on a first name basis with my community around town.
