Peace Within a Tantrum

Peace Within a Tantrum

Last night my three and a half year old daughter had a tantrum.  It was a big one for her.  I have some stories about why it might have happened (tired, hungry) but what I’ve learned from the few ‘tantrums’ she’s thrown that once we’re in them, there’s nothing to do but get on the ride with her.

Last night, in the midst of her fury and yelling, I asked myself: “What do I want when I’m this upset?” and I thought: “Love.”  So I loved her.  I looked into her eyes as she yelled with all her might and silently welcomed her yelling.

She yelled loud and long.  Her little face turned red from pushing with all the force of her expression.  I looked right into her beautiful big brown eyes.  I saw her.  I listened.  I loved her.

In a few moments she was sobbing in my arms.  And then in a few more, we were playing on the bed.

What is a ‘tantrum’ but an invitation into love?  To love me, to love her, to love the world in all the apparent and uncontrollable imperfection.

Life is sweet.

Thanks for reading.
