Can You Have Fun Without Drama?
People are fond of saying that conflict and fighting provide the juice in relationships, and without them life would be boring and repetitive. This point of view has always puzzled me. What people don’t seem to see in the heat of conflict is the here-we-go-again factor. As Edna St. Vincent Millay said: “It’s not one damn thing after another; it’s the same damn thing over and over.”
Something erases the ability to recognize that you’ve been here before when your partner gets withdrawn and you chase after him/her, and s/he snarls and you get righteous/hurt/snotty (fill in the blank). Is this about surviving, about the brain saying, “Whew, we made it again!” Is it our own personal roller coaster ride that feels wildly exciting-scary and ends back at the same place you started? I suspect the “something” is adrenaline, and that a MAJOR task of our time is to replace adrenaline addiction with appreciation, collaboration and authenticity (Click HERE to see more).
People do love stories and love hearing the good ones over and over. It’s time to move beyond stories of survival (“Veni, vidi, vici”—We came, we saw, we conquered.) We’ve done that to the extent that the planet is about ready to extinguish this species. Let’s create a new story called: How much love and creativity can I handle? How much appreciation and harmony can I generate with others? How can I add to what’s working around me? Let’s have marriage counseling focus on these questions. Let’s use the Law of Attraction to dream up radically new possibilities. Conscious relationships CAN be fun, big fun for everyone (Click HERE to see more).
What engaging and fulfilling new stories are you creating in your partnerships, family, work and community?
